Saturday 8 December 2007PRE-CHRISTMAS SOCIAL AND MEAL, LONDONLeader: Andrew
  • Meet 10.30 North Greenwich tube (tube station for the 02 Millennium Dome) or meet 11am Thames Barrier information centre. Those meeting at North Greenwich Tube will walk to the Thames Barrier along the Thames Path (c 20 mins walk).
  • 11am – c12am look round the information centre (it has a café that “offers spectacular views of the Barrier”)
  • c12am – walk back along the Thames Path to Greenwich, stopping off at the Dome (briefly) along the way (c 50 mins walk)
  • 1pm or so – lunch in Greenwich (wide choice of cafes, pubs or sandwich shops)
  • 2pm or so, leave Greenwich and walk to London Bridge or Tower Bridge (depending on time) along the Thames Path with possible visit to HMS Belfast if there’s time (c 2hrs walk)
  • Evening meal in London, venue tbc (but likely to be either Café Rouge near London Bridge or a Turkish restaurant near Waterloo station).
People are welcome to drop in/ drop out of any part of the day although I’d like to know restaurant numbers by the day before if possible.

Meet 10.50 at Longfield Station (10.11 from London Victoria, arrive 10.51). Car drivers: Free street parking in Kent Road and Essex Road (off Station Road) then 5 min walk to Station.

Updated. An 8 mile linear walk from Ashurst to Brockenhurst via Matley Heath and Denny Lodge Inclosure.  Pub lunch at Beaulieu Road Inn and finishing with afternoon tea in Brockenhurst.
Meet 10.45 Ashurst (New Forest) Railway Station.  Due to Engineering Works,there are no trains between Southampton Airport and Southampton Central. Linda has offered a lift from Southampton Airport to Ashurst if required to meet the 09.05 from London Waterloo (arrive Southampton Airport 10.22). Please email if you would like a lift.

Note change of Plan. Meet 10.30 at North Greenwich tube (the 02 Dome station) hopefully for visit to the Tutankhamun Exhibition. It has not been possible to book advanced tickets for the exhibition, so we will walk up to the Dome and see what tickets are available on the day and at what times, then structure the rest of the day around the time we can (hopefully) get into the exhibition. Optional short circular walk along the Thames Estuary. I feel sure we will get into the exhibition on the Saturday and at a reasonable time: there were, for example, only a handful of people queing when we visited the Dome just before Christmas.

A 10 mile linear walk from Christchurch to Hinton Admiral via Christchurch Harbour, Stanpit Marsh, Hengistbury Head & Highcliffe Castle. Includes a short ferry ride, Beach cafes and sea swimming possibilities!
Meet 11.15 Christchurch Station (08.54 from London Waterloo, arrive 11.15). Return by train from Hinton Admiral Station.

A 13 mile linear walk from Seaford to Eastbourne including some of the finest costal walking in England (it says in the book). Please bring plenty of water if it's a hot day. Tea shop at Beachy Head pub, possible evening meal in Eastbourne.
Meet 10.45 Seaford station (9.17 from London Victoria, arrive Lewes 10.22; change & depart 10.28, arrive Seaford 10.46). Return by train from Eastbourne.

A 20 mile linear walk from Poole to Wareham via the Sandbanks Ferry and Studland Bay. Including part of the Purbeck Way with views across to the Isle of Wight. Possible finish point at Corfe Castle after 15 miles.

There is a free car park near the hostel.  Audley End Railway Station is approx 2 miles from the hostel and there is a good service from Liverpool Street.  Please phone for more information on the walks or if you would like a lift from the Station.

Saturday 23 August 2008TENNYSON DOWN AND THE NEEDLES, ISLE OF WIGHT (WEST COAST)Leader: Greg
A choice of 12 and 8 mile circular walks via Tennyson Down, Alum Bay Chine and The Needles. Both walks then cross Headon Warren and follow the coast to Colwell Bay. The longer walk continues to Fort Victoria Country Park while the shorter walk continues via Golden Hill Country Park; both walks then return via the Freshwater Way to Freshwater Bay for afternoon tea.
Meet 09.15 at Totland Bay Youth Hostel.

A choice of 13 and 9 mile linear walks via Isle of Wight Pearl, taking in Brightstone and Compton Bays. The longer walk starts at Shorewell; the shorter walk at Brightstone. Both walks continue to Freshwater Bay with an option to return via Tennyson Down and the Monument.
Meet 09.00 at Totland Bay Youth Hostel. Catch 09.13 Bus (No.7) from Totland to Brightstone and Shorewell.

A 13 mile linear walk from Hurst Green to Chiddingstone Causeway (Penshurst Station) along the hills of northern Kent with a pub lunch. Note that it is tricky to get back to Hurst Green from Penshurst Station. Car drivers could either travel to the walk by train or possibly we could leave a car(s) in Penshurst to take drivers back to Hurst Green.

A 13 mile circular walk heading north from Ringwood on the Avon Valley Path past Blashford Lake. Then sweep east into the New Forest before returning via the 'Great Linford Inclosure'. Please bring a packed lunch, although there will be an opportunity for an afternoon refreshment stop. Pub meal to finish in Ringwood.
Meet 11.30 at 'Meeting House Lane', National Express Bus Stop (GR. SU148053, next to tourist office), Ringwood (09.00 National Express Coach from London Victoria (arr. 11.05) or 10.40 bus (X3) from Salisbury (arr. 11.21).
Directions to Meeting House Lane: from Southampton, turn left onto B3347 from A31 at Ringwood (first exit off Roundabout). At next small roundabout take third exit (turn right) and park in long stay car park (£5 per day); or suggest park in a street north of A31. Walk across to meeting place.

Meet 11.00 at Hayes Galleria (5 mins walk from London Bridge station) for a walking tour of London's infamous (well, historically infamous anyway) buildings and locations. Your guide (me) will provide invocative details at each location and guests are invited to bring their own sound effects (e.g. ghostly, blood curling screams, rattling chains, etc). Packed lunch or buy lunch on the day, evening meal in London.

Saturday 8 November 2008KINGS WORTHY WALK / Winchester Fireworks Spectacular!Leader: Greg
A 6 mile circular walk from Kings Worthy including part of the Alresford Drove. Pub lunch at The King Charles in Kings Worthy. Following a light meal in Winchester, see the Winchester Round Table Bonfire and Firework Display, which also includes a torchlight procession through the city centre.
Meet 11.30 Winchester Railway Station (10.35 from London Waterloo, arrive 11.32). Catch 11.48 Bus (Spring) from City Road (5 min. walk) to Kings Worthy (arr. 12.00).
