Whitby Weekend - May 2016
Nine members enjoyed an up-market weekend break at Larpool Hall, the HF house outside Whitby. With few other guests staying it was single rooms all round!
Saturday's walk began with a walk into Whitby along an old railway track. After a quick look round and an ascent of the 199 steps we set off South along the Cleveland Way towards Robin Hoods Bay. The weather was warm with sunny intervals and frequent short showers, so there was much putting-on and taking-off of waterproofs. While descending the steep road into Robin Hoods Bay we were congratulated by some locals who thought we were just finishing the Coast-to-Coast walk – did we really look as though we had walked 192 miles? Probably. Later we saw some 'real' C2C-ers finishing their journey in the traditional way, while after our traditional end-of-walk tea and cakes we caught the bus back to Whitby.
On Sunday we again walked into Whitby then took the bus to Sandsend (being criticised by a local for not walking the 3 miles) where we were joined by three 'day-trippers'; Lesley, Sharon and John. We then set off North on the Cleveland Way towards Staithes. Again the weather was much better than forecast, with only one shower in the late afternoon. There was paddling and ice-cream at Runswick Bay, and again a bus back to Whitby.
Many thanks to Chris for organising the weekend and for the 'slide show' on Sunday evening.
