Southern Area Walks

From the South Coast, North and South Downs to the Chilterns and all points in between, we have a selection of walks to suit all abilities. You’ll find details of the future walking programme on this page as well as a link to the last 12 months' programme so you can see what you've missed!

Non-members are welcome to ’try us out’ on a couple of day walks before deciding to join, but we ask you to check with the leader first. Click on the leader’s name to send an email. Where no email address is given use the contact form and we will put you in touch.

Where a walk involves public transport it is advisable to check the train or bus times beforehand. A packed lunch will be needed unless stated otherwise, although we try to finish most walks with a tea shop / pub stop.

A 9 mile linear walk from St Margaret's to Cheshunt following the New River. Pub lunch in Broxbourne.

A 9 mile linear walk from Leatherhead to Dorking. Pub lunch at the Stepping Stones, West Humble. Tea shop in Dorking.

Saturday 25 MayHINDHEAD, SURREYLeader: Peter
An 11 mile circular walk from Hindhead via Waggoners Wells and Ludshott Common. Packed lunch. Afternoon tea stop at the Punch Bowl café.
Meet the leader at 09.55 Haslemere Station (09.00 from London Waterloo, arrive 09.51). We will take the route 19 Aldershot bus at 10.11 to Hindhead, arrive 10.20. If you are coming by car, either meet at Haslemere Station or 10.25 in the NT car park outside the Punch Bowl café in Hindhead – see https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/hindhead-commons-and-the-devils-punch-bowl. Return by bus to Haslemere.
Saturday 1 JuneGREAT BEDWYN, WILTS TO KINTBURY, BERKSLeader: Richard M.
A 14 mile linear walk from Great Bedwyn to Kintbury via Kennet & Avon Canal at Crofton, the Mid-Wilts Way and Inkpen Hill. An old favourite walk along the crest of the Wiltshire Downs but in the opposite direction for a change. Packed lunch (unfortunately, the Swan at Lower Green closed last year). Possible drink or meal at end in Kintbury.
Meet 10.25 Bedwyn Station (09.07 from London Paddington, arrive 10.23). Return from Kintbury Station.
Saturday 8 JuneMANOR PARK TO ILFORD, EAST LONDONLeader: Dave
A 9 mile walk via the wildlife sanctuaries of Wansted Flats and Park, and Valentines Park. Café lunch and 2 tea stops, including afternoon tea at the leader’s house after the walk. This is a different (and much drier!) walk than last year.
Meet 10.45 Manor Park Station (Regular trains - every 10 minutes - from Liverpool Street, journey time 15 mins). Return from Ilford Station (3 minute train ride from Manor Park). For those driving, Clements Road multi-storey car park is 200m from Ilford Station.

Saturday 29 JuneWENDOVER, BUCKSLeader: Phil
A 10 mile circular walk in the Chilterns, initially following the Ridgeway, then up into Wendover Woods for café lunch. Return via Bucks county summit, then down to and along the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal.

Saturday 6 JulyMIDGHAM (WOOLHAMTON) TO NEWBURY, BERKSLeader: Richard M.
An 11 mile linear walk from Midgham Station (in Woolhampton) to Newbury via Brimpton, pub at Ashford Hill (limited menu on Saturdays), Crookham. Possible drink or meal at end in Newbury.
Meet 10.30 Midgham Station (09.30 from London Paddington, arr. Reading 09.55, change & depart 10.12, arrive Midgham 10.29). Return from Newbury Station. Buy return to Newbury.
Saturday 13 JulyHAYES, KENT TO BIGGIN HILLLeader: Hilary and Aline
A 5 mile linear walk in the morning from Hayes to Biggin Hill. Picnic lunch, or eat at Biggin Hill Memorial Museum café. Spend the afternoon exploring the recently opened museum, telling the story of Britain’s most famous fighter station during the Second World War. Museum has entrance fee of £7.50 without Gift Aid or £8.50 with Gift Aid.
Meet 10.40 Hayes Station (10.01 from London Bridge, arrive 10.38). Return by bus (246) to Hayes, at 06 and 36 minutes past the hour, taking 15 minutes.
Saturday 20 JulySEAFORD TO EASTBOURNE, EAST SUSSEXLeader: Claire
A 14 mile linear walk from Seaford to Eastbourne including the iconic Seven Sisters and Beachy Head. Packed lunch, café stop at Birling Gap.
Meet 10.50 Seaford station (09.16 from London Victoria, arrive Lewes 10.23; change & depart 10.29, arrive Seaford 10.47). Return from Eastbourne Station.
Saturday 27 JulyFRENSHAM PONDS, SURREYLeader: Greg
An 11 mile linear walk from Bentley, Hants to Farnham, Surrey. The route passes through Alice Holt Forest where we will stop for morning coffee at the café. We continue to Frensham Great Pond for packed lunch on the sandy beach. A snack bar is also available for hot drinks. After lunch, the walk continues via Frensham Little Pond and Farnham Heath Nature Reserve to Farnham.
Meet 11.00 Bentley Station (09.53 from London Waterloo, arrive 11.01). Return from Farnham Station.

A 13 mile linear walk from Eridge to Uckfield following the Wealdway through the centre of the Ashdown Forest. Packed lunch with a view. Possible evening meal in Uckfield.

Saturday 7 SeptemberBRIGHTON TO NEWHAVEN, EAST SUSSEXLeader: Roger
An 11 mile linear coastal walk from Brighton to Newhaven, via Peacehaven and the Greenwich Meridian Memorial. Packed lunch.
Meet 10.50 Brighton Station outside WH Smith (inside station). Regular trains from several London terminals, including 09.35 from London Bridge, arrive 10.44. Return from Newhaven Town Station. Buy return to Newhaven Town.

A 12 mile circular walk in the South Downs via St Catherine’s Hill and Cheesefoot Head. Pub lunch at The Ship Inn, Owslebury.
Meet 10.35 Winchester Station (09.35 from London Waterloo, arrive 10.32), or 11.00 St Catherine’s Park and Ride. We will catch the bus from the Station to the P&R where the walk starts.

Saturday 19 OctoberSOCIAL: CAMBRIDGELeader: Chris
A 3 mile circular tour, including some of Cambridge’s most beautiful buildings and the picturesque area of The Backs, where several of Cambridge University’s colleges back onto the River Cam. We also plan to visit The Polar Museum of the Scott Polar Research Institute (free entrance) and, optionally, the American Second World War cemetery and memorial, 3 miles outside Cambridge (travel by bus). Café lunch at Fitzbillies Cake Shop & Restaurant.

A 9-10 mile circular walk experiencing the autumn colours of this ancient woodland.
