Southern Area Walks

From the South Coast, North and South Downs to the Chilterns and all points in between, we have a selection of walks to suit all abilities. You’ll find details of the future walking programme on this page as well as a link to the last 12 months' programme so you can see what you've missed!

Non-members are welcome to ’try us out’ on a couple of day walks before deciding to join, but we ask you to check with the leader first. Click on the leader’s name to send an email. Where no email address is given use the contact form and we will put you in touch.

Where a walk involves public transport it is advisable to check the train or bus times beforehand. A packed lunch will be needed unless stated otherwise, although we try to finish most walks with a tea shop / pub stop.

Saturday 21 AprilCHESTERFORD, ESSEXLeader: Hilary and Bob
A 9½ mile circular walk over rolling countryside and through a couple of attractive villages. Pub lunch at The Crown (ETA 13.00 – 13.30) in Little Walden (CB10 1XA).
Meet 10.35 Great Chesterford Station (09.13 from Liverpool Street, arrive 10.35). There is free parking on the station approach road and also in the village itself.
Lunch arrangements changed. A 10 mile linear walk from Micheldever Station to Kings Worthy via the great Bluebell display in Micheldever Wood. Pub lunch at the Northbrook Arms in East Stratton. Afternoon tea at the leader’s home in Kings Worthy. Optional 3 mile extension from Kings Worthy to Winchester or catch the bus.
Meet 11.10 Micheldever Station (10.09 from London Waterloo, arrive Micheldever 11.10). Return from Winchester Station.
Saturday 12 MayROYSTON, HERTSLeader: Judith
An 8 mile circular walk around Therfield Heath, stopping at The Fox and Duck in Therfield for pub lunch, returning to Judith's (in Royston, ETA 4pm) for homemade soup, cakes and board games (supervised by Gamesmaster Colin).
Meet 10.40 Royston Station (09.52 from Kings Cross, arrive 10.39). Those travelling by car can opt to park on the Heath and meet us at 11.10 near the entrance to the Heath Sports Club (Baldock Road, SG8 5BG).
Contact Judith to let her know where you will be meeting the group and, for catering numbers, whether you will be joining us for the social afterwards and any special dietary requirements.
Saturday 19 MayDORKING, SURREYLeader: Richard M.
An 11 mile circular walk in the North Downs including Denbies Wine Estate, Ranmore Common (hopefully the coffee & cake van will be there for our morning break) and part of the North Downs Way to pub lunch in Wotton. Returning via Bury Hill to Dorking for a cafe.
Meet 10.30 Dorking (Main) Station (09.31 from London Victoria, arrive 10.24 OR 09.34 from Reading, arrive 10.26).
Saturday 2 JuneALTON, HANTSLeader: Greg
A 12 mile circular walk including the steepest footpath in southern England at Wick Hill Hanger (which can be avoided if necessary). Pub lunch in Selborne. Return via the Hangers Way.
Mett 10.40 Alton Station (09.23 from London Waterloo, arrive 10.37).
Saturday 9 JuneWATFORD TO ST ALBANS, HERTSLeader: Phil
A 9 mile linear walk following the Abbey Line Trail from Watford Junction to St Albans Abbey station, optional extension to St Albans Cathedral for tea. Pub lunch at Moor Mill Beefeater.
Meet 10.30 Watford Junction Station (10.04 from London Euston, arr. 10.26). As the service from St Albans Abbey to Watford Jn only runs every 45 minutes, you may prefer to return from St Albans City to London (4 fast trains per hour).
Saturday 16 JunePRINCES RISBOROUGH, BUCKSLeader: Richard & Brian
An 11½ mile circular walk via Bledlow to Chinnor returning along the Swan's Way and Icknield Way Trail on the edge of the Chiltern Hills. Pub lunch in Chinnor offering South African cuisine as well as usual pub grub. Café at end.
Meet 10.30 Princes Risborough Station (09:43 from London Marylebone, arrive 10.27).
Saturday 23 JuneEAST GRINSTEAD, WEST SUSSEXLeader: Hilary
A 9½ mile circular walk around pleasant hilly countryside to the south of East Grinstead, with fine views and relatively gentle gradients, and the familiar Wealden mix of pasture, woods and ancient houses. Please ring for lunch details. Refreshments at end.
Meet 10.50 East Grinstead Station (09.53 from London Victoria, arrive 10.48).
Saturday 30 JuneTRING, HERTSLeader: Colin
A 9 mile circular walk via Marsworth reservoir & the Grand Union Canal. Pub lunch in Ivinghoe.
Meet 11.00 Tring Station (10.24 from London Euston, arrive 10.59).
Eastbourne Week. A 14 mile linear coastal walk from Eastbourne to Seaford including Beachy Head and the iconic Seven Sisters. Please bring a packed lunch. There will be a café stop in the afternoon at Exceat.
Meet 09.30 at the Albany Lions Hotel on the sea front, about 100m from the pier. Return by bus.
Saturday 28 JulyAMBERLEY, WEST SUSSEXLeader: Roger
A 12 mile circular walk including part of the South Downs Way to the west of Amberley, returning via Sutton. Packed lunch, with afternoon tea stop at the end.
Meet 10.55 Amberley Station (09.36 from London Victoria, arrive 10.55).
Saturday 4 AugustSANDOWN TO RYDE, ISLE OF WIGHTLeader: Peter
A 12 mile linear walk along the Isle of Wight coastal path from Sandown to Ryde. Please bring packed lunch. Afternoon tea and fish & chips in Ryde possible.
Walk starts from Sandown Station at 11.10 (08.30 from London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour, arrive 10.07. Then ferry Portsmouth Harbour 10.15 to Ryde Pier Head arrive 10.37, train Ryde Pier Head 10.49 to Sandown arrive 11.07). Return from Ryde.

A 10 mile circular walk taking in St Leonards Forest. Please ring for lunch details. Tea / coffee shop at end.
Meet 10.55 Horsham Station (10.06 from London Victoria, arrive 10.55).
Sunday 19 AugustDIGSWELL, HERTFORDSHIRELeader: Colin
A 9 mile circular walk through Bramfield woods & Tewin. Followed by a visit to the Tewin Classic car show & Craft fair. Packed lunch.
Meet 10.35 Welwyn North Station in Digswell (10.04 from Kings Cross, arrive 10.34).
Saturday 8 SeptemberANGMERING, WEST SUSSEXLeader: Graham
A 10 mile circular walk via Patching, Clapham, Durrington and Highdown Hill. Possible pre-walk coffee stop. Packed lunch. Possible evening or late afternoon meal if required.
Meet 10.45 Angmering Station (09.17 from London Victoria, arrive 10.45).
Saturday 15 SeptemberSANDLING TO WYE, EAST KENTLeader: Hilary and Aline
A 13 mile linear walk from Sandling to Wye following one of the best sections of the North Downs Way with fine views for nearly the whole walk. Packed lunch and Pub drink stop. Refreshments at end.
Meet 11.15 Sandling Station (09.40 from London Charing Cross, arrive 11.13 or 10.08 from London St Pancras, arrive Ashford International 10.46; change & depart 11.02, arrive Sandling 11.13). Return from Wye Station.
Saturday 22 SeptemberSANDY, BEDSLeader: Dave
A 10 mile circular featuring part of the Greensand Ridge Walk. Lunchtime pub stop, tea shop at end.
Meet 11.10 Sandy Station (10.22 from King's Cross, arrive 11.08). Free parking in Sandy High Street satnav SG19 1AG, or pay parking at the station.
Saturday 6 OctoberILFORD, EAST LONDONLeader: Dave
An 8 mile circular walk via Wansted Park, Wansted Flats and Valentines Park. The walk will include Ilford Chapel and Valentines Mansion. Café lunch. Afternoon tea at the leader’s house after the walk.
Meet 10.45 Ilford Station (Regular trains - every 10 minutes - from Liverpool Street, journey time 15 mins). For those driving, Clements Road multi-storey car park is 200m from the Station.
