Southern Area Walks

From the South Coast, North and South Downs to the Chilterns and all points in between, we have a selection of walks to suit all abilities. You’ll find details of the future walking programme on this page as well as a link to the last 12 months' programme so you can see what you've missed!

Non-members are welcome to ’try us out’ on a couple of day walks before deciding to join, but we ask you to check with the leader first. Click on the leader’s name to send an email. Where no email address is given use the contact form and we will put you in touch.

Where a walk involves public transport it is advisable to check the train or bus times beforehand. A packed lunch will be needed unless stated otherwise, although we try to finish most walks with a tea shop / pub stop.

Saturday 27 OctoberEPPING FOREST, ESSEXLeader: Hilary and Bob
Further details added. A 9-10 mile circular walk experiencing the autumn colours of this ancient woodland with some good views across London. Pub lunch at the Gardeners Arms, Loughton.
Meet 10.30 Theydon Bois tube station (Central Line, 45 mins from Tottenham Court Road) or 10.40 Jacks Hill car park on Coppice Row B172.

A 9 mile circular walk from Long Hanborough in the Cotswolds via the Blenheim Palace estate. Pub lunch at The Cock, Combe. Tea/Coffee stop near end of walk.
Meet 10.35 Hanborough Station (09.22 from London Paddington, arrive 10.32). Return at 17.12 (hourly service).

A 9½ mile circular walk from Harpenden through the Rothamsted estate and past Redbournbury Mill to Redbourn for pub lunch at The Hollybush. Return via the Nickey Line.
Meet 10.20 Harpenden Station (09.51 from London St Pancras, arrive 10.17) outside barriers on Platform 4. Pay parking at the station.

A 9 mile circular walk from Bagshot through Swinley and Bracknell Forests. Café lunch at The Discovery Centre (great fun for the child in you) and possible café in Bagshot at the end.
Meet 10.30 Bagshot Station (09.20 from London Waterloo, arrive Ascot 10.12; change & depart 10.23, arrive Bagshot 10.29).

Christmas meal at Café Rouge in Hampstead preceded by a short walk around Hampstead Heath.
Meet 11.45 Hampstead Underground Station for the pre-walk or 13.15 at Café Rouge for the Lunch.

An 8 mile circular walk from Hitchin on part of the Letchworth Greenway including Wymondly Woods and Willian Arboretum. Pub lunch in Gravely. Followed by Scalextric racing & a light supper at Colin’s house.

*Drivers may wish to use the Park & Ride from Elstow (MK42 9XF); free parking, £2.80 return bus fare, concessions accepted. Bus departs 10.15.
