Southern Area Walks

From the South Coast, North and South Downs to the Chilterns and all points in between, we have a selection of walks to suit all abilities. You’ll find details of the future walking programme on this page as well as a link to the last 12 months' programme so you can see what you've missed!

Non-members are welcome to ’try us out’ on a couple of day walks before deciding to join, but we ask you to check with the leader first. Click on the leader’s name to send an email. Where no email address is given use the contact form and we will put you in touch.

Where a walk involves public transport it is advisable to check the train or bus times beforehand. A packed lunch will be needed unless stated otherwise, although we try to finish most walks with a tea shop / pub stop.

A 10 mile linear walk from Richmond to Hampton Court including part of the Thames Path. Pub lunch in Teddington.
Meet 10.40 Richmond Station (10.20 from London Waterloo, arrive 10.36). Return from Hampton Court Station. Buy London Travelcard to cover outward and return journeys.
Saturday 4 NovemberOXFORD CIRCULARLeader: William
A 10 mile walk, including part of the Thames Path, the Oxford canal, central Oxford, Christchurch Meadows, and possibly a college or two. Lunch at the Plough Pub and afternoon tea. Please contact the leader by 2nd Nov if you intend to come, as he’d like to book lunch.

Saturday 11 NovemberLONDON LOOP - BEXLEY TO PETTS WOODLeader: Alison
A 7 mile linear walk from Bexley to Petts Wood following the London Loop, part 2. A very green, mostly easy, route through the suburbs of south east London, including open areas alongside the Cray Riverway, Foots Cray Meadows, Sidcup Place (with giant Redwood trees) and Scadbury Park Nature Reserve. Packed lunch, with tea stop at the end.
Meet 10.30 Bexley Station (09.53 from London Charing Cross, arrive 10.28). Return from Petts Wood Station. Buy London Travelcard to cover outward and return journeys.
Saturday 18 NovemberBASINGSTOKE TO HOOK, HANTSLeader: Greg
A 9 mile linear walk from Basingstoke to Hook, via Old Basing for pub lunch at The Hatch. Continue along the course of the Basingstoke Canal via King John’s Castle.
Meet 10.35 Basingstoke Station (09.39 from London Waterloo, arrive 10.31). Return from Hook Station.

A 9 mile linear coastal walk from Littlehampton to Worthing. Packed lunch with tea shop at the end.
Meet 11.00 Littlehampton Station (09.17 from London Victoria, arrive 11.00). Return from Worthing Station.

An 8 mile circular walk followed by Scalextric racing & pizza at my house. Pub lunch at the Lilley Arms in Lilley, Lavender tea rooms at the end. Please let me know if you’re coming for Scalextric.

A 9½ mile circular walk through the heart of London, along part of the Jubilee Walkway route, the Queen’s Walk and the Thames Path National Trail. Café lunch and tea stop at finish.

An 8 mile linear walk from Emsworth to Hayling Island by way of the Solent Way and Hayling Billy Coastal path. Pub lunch. Possible visit to tea room at end of walk.
Meet 10.20 Emsworth Station (08.36 from London Victoria, arrive 10.15 OR 09.32 from Southampton Central, arrive 10.15). Bus back to Havant. Return from Havant Station.

An 8½ mile circular walk via the Weald Way and North Downs through wooded areas, across fields and with some fine open views. Pub lunch at Harvel. Drink stop near the end.

A 10 mile circular walk from Gordon Hill, with good views over central London and Hertfordshire, through farms and woods, and along part of the London Loop and the New River. Pub lunch and tea stop at Forty Hall.

A 10 mile linear walk from Brighton to Lewes via Woodingdean and Kingston. Packed lunch / possible pub drink. Maybe pre-walk coffee at cafe in Brighton.
Meet 10.45 Brighton Station outside WH Smith (inside station). Regular trains from several London terminals, including 09.42 from London Bridge, arrive 10.42. Return from Lewes Station.

An 11 mile circular walk through the High Weald, an area of outstanding natural beauty. We will stop for pub lunch at Mayfield, which has a 15th century church. There will be a tea stop at the end.

A 10 mile linear walk from Micheldever Station to Kings Worthy via the great Bluebell display in Micheldever Wood. Pub lunch at The Half Moon & Spread Eagle in Micheldever village. Afternoon tea at the leader’s home in Kings Worthy. Optional 3 mile extension from Kings Worthy to Winchester or catch the bus.
