Southern Area Walks

From the South Coast, North and South Downs to the Chilterns and all points in between, we have a selection of walks to suit all abilities. You’ll find details of the future walking programme on this page as well as a link to the last 12 months' programme so you can see what you've missed!

Non-members are welcome to ’try us out’ on a couple of day walks before deciding to join, but we ask you to check with the leader first. Click on the leader’s name to send an email. Where no email address is given use the contact form and we will put you in touch.

Where a walk involves public transport it is advisable to check the train or bus times beforehand. Where a pub lunch is offered, please let the leader know by the Wednesday before the walk so that a table can be booked.

Current Southern Walks Programme

Walk leaders must carry out a written risk assessment and return it to the Secretary. This is required as part of the conditions of our insurance. The risk assessment form can be found here (PDF) or here (MS Office).

Walk details and finish time updated. A 10.5 mile circular walk in the Cotswolds from Long Hanborough, via the Blenheim Palace estate. Pub lunch at The Cock, Combe.
Meet 10.55 Hanborough Station (09.50 from London Paddington, arrive 10.53). Return at 18.19 (hourly service).

An 11 mile circular walk, heading west on the South Downs Way via Bignor Hill. Return via Bury. Packed Lunch.
Meet 11.00 Amberley Station (09.35 from London Victoria, arrive 10.57).
Saturday 11 JuneHARPENDEN, HERTSLeader: Phil
A 9½ mile circular walk along an old railway line (the ‘Nickey Line’) then to Redbourn for pub lunch at The Hollybush, returning via Redbournbury Mill and Harpenden Common.
Meet 10.50 Harpenden Station main entrance (Platform 4) (10.21 from London St Pancras, arrive 10.47).
Saturday 18 JuneEAST MEON, HANTSLeader: Richard M.
A 12 mile circular walk in the South Downs National Park from East Meon via South Downs Way to Whitewool Farm, then Monarch’s Way to Mercury for lunch stop at the Beech café (vegetarian & vegan), Hyden Hill, the source of the River Meon and Cumber’s Lane back to East Meon. Possible pub at end.
Meet 10.00 East Meon free car park (GU32 1PF), Workhouse Lane (09.05 bus 67 from Winchester (City Road), arrive 09.58 then 5 minute walk to car park; return bus at 16.45).
Saturday 25 JuneDIDCOT, OXONLeader: Greg
A 13 mile circular walk from Didcot via Castle Hill to Dorchester for pub lunch at the Fleur de Lys. Return via the Thames Path and Long Wittenham.
Meet 10.40 Didcot Parkway Station (10.02 from London Paddington, arrive 10.39).
Saturday 2 JulySEAFORD TO EASTBOURNE, EAST SUSSEXLeader: Jim
A 14 mile linear walk from Seaford to Eastbourne including the iconic Seven Sisters and Beachy Head. Packed lunch, café stop at Birling Gap.
Meet 10.50 Seaford station (09.24 from London Victoria, arrive Lewes 10.26; change & depart 10.30, arrive Seaford 10.48). Return from Eastbourne Station.

A 10 mile circular walk from Kintbury. Packed lunch. Possible pub drinks stop.
Meet 11.05 Kintbury Station (10.07 from London Paddington, arrive 11.01).
Saturday 30 JulyHASTINGS TO RYE, EAST SUSSEXLeader: Chris
A 12 mile linear walk from Hastings to Rye, following the Saxon Shore Way and the Royal Military Canal via Winchelsea. Packed lunch, afternoon beach stop. Return from Rye Station. Buy return to Rye, via Hastings. Optional return from Winchelsea Station after 10 miles.
Meet 10.50 Hastings Station (09.15 from London Charing Cross, arrive 10.48). Return from Rye Station (hourly at xx.47 to Hastings, then xx.31 to Charing Cross).
Saturday 6 AugustAMBERLEY TO SHOREHAM, WEST SUSSEXLeader: Nick
A 16 mile linear walk from Amberley heading east on the South Downs Way to Shoreham. Packed lunch with potential evening meal at the end of the walk.
Meet 11.00 Amberley Station (09.35 from London Victoria, arrive 10.57). Return from Shoreham. From London buy a return to Ford to cover outward and return journeys.
