22 members enjoyed a pre-Christmas long weekend to the Cairn Hotel Harrogate staying from 1 to 3 nights.
For those who could arrive by early afternoon on Friday there was a 5 mile walk partly along the Harrogate Ringway to Harlow Carr Gardens returning through the pinewoods and Valley Gardens.
On Saturday there were 2 walks led by Peter and Sonia. The A party took cars to Blubberhouses and did a circular walk taking in 2 reservoirs which supply water to Leeds. The B party walked from the hotel via the Harrogate Ringway through the Nidd Gorge to Knaresborough where the Christmas market was in full swing. The highlight of this walk was spotting an otter and a kingfisher in the river Nidd. After refreshments return to Harrogate was by service bus.
On Sunday the A party did the same walk as B party did on Saturday except that they walked back to Harrogate via a different route. The B party took the service bus from outside the hotel to Ripon and did a figure of 8 walk through the Studley Royal deer park to Fountains Abbey where they enjoyed refreshments in the cafe before returning to Ripon for refreshments and the bus back to Harrogate.
The weather was extremely cold all weekend and it was good to return to the warm hotel after the walks and enjoy a hot bath or shower.
