OKEHAMPTON – 28 February-2 March 2025

I propose to organise a walking weekend in spring 2025 based around Okehampton in Devon, on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. I believe Footprints last stayed in the area at Okehampton Youth Hostel back in 2000? Times have changed since then, given that Footprints rarely stay in Youth Hostels now and that Okehampton is now connected to the national rail network with a regular rail service from Exeter. Wetherspoons have continued their upward growth as a pub chain offering
reasonably-priced accommodation and meals, and this is where we will be staying in Okehampton!

The Accommodation
The White Hart Hotel in the centre of Okehampton is a Wetherspoons pub offering accommodation. There are 4 double rooms and 14 convertible double/twin rooms, all of which can be let as singles. At the time of writing, for the weekend in question all rooms are available and prices are around £75 per night for room only basis, with no refunds offered if cancelled. A higher price is available if a cancellation option is required. The pub does breakfasts and evening meals (not included in the accommodation price), and it is proposed to eat an evening meal in the pub for 1 night. There are other eating options in the town, Indian and Chinese restaurants, and it is proposed to eat at one of these establishments on the Saturday night. There are also shops nearby, cafés and bakeries and a supermarket convenience store where supplies for packed lunches can be bought. And there may be a café offering early morning breakfasts?

I propose that members book their own accommodation via https://hotels.jdwetherspoon.com/hotels/the-white-hart/ and inform me when they have done so. Members can have the option of staying the Thursday night or the Sunday night to lengthen the weekend, and there may be a walk offered in the area on the Friday.
Members are also welcome to arrange their own accommodation in the town and join the group for walks and evening meals. I believe there is a Travelodge nearby, and Okehampton Youth Hostel by the railway station may be open.

The walking
Depending on leader availability, there would be A and B walks offered on the Saturday and the Sunday. Okehampton is on the edge of Dartmoor National Park and there could be walks to explore the National Park and to view the preserved Meldon railway viaduct near Okehampton. Longer walking options are available, for example by catching the Okehampton to Tavistock bus and then walking back across Dartmoor to Okehampton.

Getting there
Okehampton can be reached by train from Exeter St. David’s station (hourly service). The town is off the main A30 road from Exeter to Penzance, which connects to the M5 at Exeter.
